Transcript:

Most networking advice is terrible. Just add value. Just put yourself out there. Just show up. But no one ever tells you what to actually do.

So if you feel like you don’t have a real network, or you don’t know how to build one, here’s a simple roadmap.

Step 1: Build a network tracker.
Open a spreadsheet, Notion, whatever works for you. Create three columns:

  • Name
  • How do I know them
  • Strength of relationship (1–3 scale)

Start with current and past coworkers, friends, people you’ve been on calls with, deals you’ve closed, anyone you’ve interacted with professionally in the last two to three years. You’ll be shocked at how quickly you can build a solid list. Aim for 25 names to start. If you get stuck, scroll LinkedIn connections or your recent email/calendar invites.

Step 2: Reactivate five dormant relationships per week.
No asks, just reconnect. Reach out to people you haven’t spoken to in a while and start conversations. Add columns in your tracker for “last contacted” and “next follow-up” to stay consistent.

Consistency matters more than charisma. The worst thing you can do is disappear for years and then pop up only when you need something. Build relationships before you need them, so when the time comes, those doors are already open.

Step 3: Turn your LinkedIn profile into a networking tool.
Think “talk to me,” not “hire me” or “ignore me.”

Instead of a headline like Account Executive at SaaSCo, try something that speaks to your ICP, like Helping revenue teams turn networks into warm pipeline. That sparks curiosity and invites conversations.

Update your About section. Share what you do, who you work with, and who you are as a person. Keep your Featured section fresh: Pin a helpful post, a win, a resource, or anything that adds context to how you help your ICP.

Open your DMs. Then move to the next step: meeting people.

Step 4: Engage first, then connect.
If you’re not ready to post, comment. Block 15 minutes a day to comment on posts from people in your industry, creators in your space, or target accounts.

But don’t just drop “Great post.” And please don’t use AI-generated comments. Nobody likes that. Actually read and respond thoughtfully:

  • “I’ve run into this issue too, here’s what worked for me.”
  • “This gave me an idea for X, thanks for sharing.”
  • “I’m curious how you would approach Y.”

Do this consistently. Five comments a week adds up to 20+ new connections per month.

Step 5: Join high-intent communities.
Find where your ICP already hangs out: Slack groups, Discords, LinkedIn groups, meetups, live courses. Introduce yourself, answer questions, and engage. Don’t pitch. Don’t sell. Be visible, be helpful, become someone others see as trustworthy.

Step 6: Build a simple networking ritual.
Put it on your calendar. Here’s an easy starter cadence:

  • Monday (15 min): Reconnect with 3 people + comment on 2 posts.
  • Wednesday (15 min): Message 2 connections + engage in 1 community.
  • Friday (15 min): Share 1 piece of value (post, DM, comment, or community contribution).

That’s it.

The best time to start was yesterday. The second-best time is today.

You will never regret building a stronger network. Talk to anyone with a great network, they’ll tell you it’s helped them land jobs, find hires, make friends, and yes, hit quota.

One relationship a week compounds into 50 by the end of the year. And 50 real relationships will beat 5,000 cold leads every single time.
